Given its mountainous landscape and sports-loving population, it may seem obvious that Switzerland has played a defining role in the history of the Winter Olympic Games. The country has hosted the Games twice, both times in St. Moritz – first in 1928, when the Winter Olympics were held for the first time as a stand-alone event independent of the Summer Olympics, and again in 1948.
Switzerland is also home to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which has been headquartered in Lausanne since 1915. Over the decades, numerous international sports federations and organizations have followed, firmly establishing Lausanne as a global center for international sport. In recognition of this unique role, the IOC officially designated Lausanne as the Olympic Capital in 1993. Switzerland currently plays host to around 60 international sports federations.
Given this long-standing and close relationship between Switzerland and the Olympic Movement, it is no surprise that the Swiss are eagerly anticipating the 2026 Winter Olympic Games in Milano Cortina, Italy.
At the upcoming Games, the Swiss delegation will be comprised of a record-breaking 175 athletes, each representing the nation’s tradition of sporting excellence and its deep Olympic heritage. Several members of the team may already be familiar to U.S. audiences, including Jonas Siegenthaler, Nico Hischier, and Timo Meier. All three play in the NHL for the New Jersey Devils and will represent Switzerland on the national ice hockey team. If you’re a ski-enthusiast, you might be excited to see legend Marco Odermatt back on the slopes. And if you’re more of a Summer Olympic Games fan, stay tuned to see Salomé Kora make history. The sprinter/bobsledder will become the first Swiss athlete to compete in both the Summer and Winter Games!
