Every two years, alternating between the World Cup and the European Football Championship, football fans all over Switzerland are overcome by football fever. This summer is no exception, and all football enthusiasts, from young to old, had their Swiss jerseys, flags, scarves, and face paint ready for the Swiss national team’s matches.
Led by captain Granit Xhaka, the Swiss team faced Hungary, Scotland, and Germany in the group stage and Italy in the round of 16. Thanks to the national team’s strong performance during the tournament, Switzerland made it to the quarter-finals, where it faced England on Saturday, July 6. After Switzerland had taken a 1-0 lead in the 75th minute with a goal from Breel Embolo, England’s Bukayo Saka scored in the 80th minute. With the score tied after 90 minutes, the game went into extra time, in which neither of the teams scored. The thrilling game was only decided in the nerve-wracking penalty shoot-out, in which England ultimately won.
During many watch parties for the Swiss games across the United States, fans of the national team and friends of Switzerland celebrated the successes and cheered for our football players. Take a look at the pictures we received from some fans in the U.S. in the image gallery below.
