Switzerland and the United States have a long-standing excellent relationship that allows for successful cooperation in various fields. The close ties between the two countries are also based on mutually beneficial economic relations, which contribute substantially to the prosperity and welfare of the economies of both countries.

On the foundation of shared core values of democracy, respect for human dignity, and the rule of law, the strong Swiss-U.S. ties have shown resilience during the recent years marked by a global pandemic and increasing geopolitical instability. Nevertheless, the economic relations between Switzerland and the United States have been further strengthened, and today, Switzerland is the seventh largest foreign direct investor in the United States with a cumulative investment of more than $300 billion. Further, Switzerland supports close to half a million well-paid American jobs in all U.S. states. In 2019, Swiss affiliates supported 490’000 U.S. jobs at an average salary of $110’000 across various industries, such as the chemical, food, financial, and insurance industry.

On March 29, 2023, the Embassy of Switzerland in Washington, D.C. celebrated the positive economic impact of Switzerland in the United States with a reception at the United States House of Representatives and the launch of an updated FDI brochure. Swiss Parliamentarians from the Parliamentary Association Switzerland-USA (Christa Markwalder, Eric Nussbaumer, and Sibel Arslan) as well as Congressmen from the Friends of Switzerland Caucus (Jim McGovern and Bill Huizenga) emphasized Switzerland’s role as an important economic partner of the United States and addressed the strong economic ties benefitting both countries.

In his remarks, the Swiss Ambassador to the United States, Jacques Pitteloud, said that “Switzerland is truly a powerhouse in the United States. The last two years have been disruptive in many ways. However, Swiss-U.S. ties have remained resilient, and continue to strengthen during these challenging times.”
