Every four years, the FIFA World Cup brings together nations, cultures, and fans from around the globe. From June 11 – July 19, 2026, football’s biggest celebration returns to North America, where the United States, Canada, and Mexico will host the largest World Cup in history, featuring 48 nations for the first time.
Football may not be the first sport that comes to mind when thinking of Switzerland, but the game plays an important role across the country. From local village clubs to sold-out stadiums in Basel, Bern, Geneva, and Zurich, football is Switzerland’s most popular team sport. Switzerland’s connection to the World Cup extends beyond the pitch. Founded in 1895, the Swiss Football Association (SFV/ASF) is one of the oldest football federations in the world, while FIFA has been headquartered in Zurich since 1932, making the country home to the governing body of the world’s most popular sport. Switzerland also hosted the FIFA World Cup in 1954, welcoming teams and fans from around the globe.
The Swiss Men’s National Team, known as the “Nati,” has established itself as one of Europe’s most consistent national teams, appearing in six consecutive FIFA World Cups and regularly competing at the highest level. The squad brings together experienced internationals such as captain Granit Xhaka, Manuel Akanji, and Ricardo Rodriguez with emerging talents including Gregor Kobel, Ardon Jashari, and Dan Ndoye. Led by head coach Murat Yakin, the Swiss national team heads to North America full of confidence after a memorable UEFA Euro 2024 campaign and an unbeaten World Cup qualification run.
Switzerland began its 2026 FIFA World Cup journey with three group-stage matches across the United States and Canada, ultimately securing top spot in the group and advancing to the knockout stage as group winners.
