Switzerland celebrates its National Day on August 1, commemorating the signing of the Letter of Confederation of 1291. The Swiss traditionally celebrate this day with the lighting of bonfires, setting off fireworks, and participating at parades throughout the country with yodeling choirs, alphorns, and flag-throwers.
But August 1 is not only a special day for the people living in Switzerland. It is also a day when the many Swiss citizens and friends of Switzerland living abroad come together to celebrate the country, its people, traditions, and culture.
In Washington, D.C., over 500 people attended this year’s memorable celebration organized by the Swiss Club of D.C. at the Embassy of Switzerland on Saturday, July 29, 2023. The Ambassador of Switzerland to the United States, Jacques Pitteloud, mentioned in his speech the strong resilience of the Swiss people, which the guests certainly proved by braving the extreme weather conditions on that day. While there were contingency plans for smoke and extreme heat, unexpectedly strong winds and a rainstorm hit the D.C. area instead. Despite everyone being momentarily soaked and wind swept, the guests dried off quickly, set out trays of sausages and potato salad, started the music once again, and the Swiss National Day celebrations continued with plenty of fun for everyone.
