The exhibition “Threads of Power: Lace from the Textilmuseum St. Gallen” was the first large-scale installation that traced the history of lace in fashion and showcased how high-quality machine-made lace by St. Gallen-based textile companies Forster Rohner, Jakob Schlaepfer, and Bischoff Textil is integral to contemporary couture of the world’s best-known brands such as Prada, Dior, and Givenchy. Opened during New York Fashion Week in September 2022 at the Bard Graduate Center, it displayed approximately 150 pieces of the Textilmuseum St.Gallen’s internationally important lace collection and underscored the continued relevance and importance of the textile industry in St. Gallen, far beyond Switzerland’s borders.
The exhibition was open until January 1, 2023 and gave visitors the chance to immerse themselves in the history and evolution of this centuries-old craft, which despite its long tradition is also shaped by Switzerland’s continuous drive for innovation. This was showcased particularly well by a 3D-printed lace used in contemporary haute couture.
In conjunction with this exhibition, the fashion label Maya Seyferth presented her latest collection of printed textiles by Jakob Schlaepfer at the residence of the Swiss Consul General, Niculin Jäger. This exclusive event offered a great opportunity for key representatives of the U.S. fashion industry to meet with Swiss designers, exhibitors, and potential future partners.
