In keeping with Switzerland’s internationally recognized and valued role as a bridge builder, the Consulate General of Switzerland in New York had the initial idea to launch the Consulate Cup NYC. It aims to connect the diplomatic community in New York with local communities throughout the boroughs, raise awareness for social issues and promote equal access to sports for everyone. Therefore, 100% of the Consulates’ participation fees and a substantial amount from the Consulate Cup’s main sponsor, Adidas, were donated to NYCFC’s City in the Community Foundation to support access to soccer programs for children in underserved communities.
The Consulate Cup is now a yearly soccer tournament organized by the Consulate General of Switzerland in collaboration with the NYC Football Club (MLS Cup Champion 2021), the Mayor’s Fund to Advance NYC, and in partnership with the Consulate General of Mexico, the Consulate General of the United Arab Emirates, and the NYC African Advisory Council.
The Mayor of New York City, Eric Adams, supported his initiative and said, “Sports have the incredible power to bring people together and change lives, and as mayor of the most diverse city in the United States – one filled with soccer fans – I am thrilled New York City is hosting the Consulate Cup tournament in the lead up to the World Cup in 2026.”
